I know that I haven't posted anything in a really long time. It's mostly because I've been working on getting things going more with Will Cycle for Charity, and then also because I'm super lazy.

That being said, if there is anyone still out there listening (reading (whatever)), I'm killing this blog. All of the information that I would be posting here will be posted on Will Cycle's new website (same address) www.WillCycleForCharity.com

The new website is much more advanced and easy to update than the previous and than this blog for a matter of fact. Plus we want to consolidate all of our information into one spot.

Soo, if you still want to follow Will Cycle and you want to hear about various cycling related news from around town, head over to the Will Cycle site.

A note about teams for the scavenger hunt

The reason we're having teams for this event is so that you have someone to take the picture with you and your bike so you don't have to hand off your camera to strangers every time. You need to have you and your bike in the picture so a teammate is ideal. That being said, there isn't really a limit to team size BUT if you have a team of more than two, everyone on the team except for the person taking the picture HAS TO BE IN THE PICTURE. Otherwise people could be on 'teams' but split off.

Just want to give everyone a head's up.

Crank and Click, City wide scavenger hunt

Well, after a bit of a hiatus we're back with another cycling event.
That's right, a city wide scavenger hunt. A digital camera scavenger hunt to be exact. You won't need to carry around objects in your bag, just your camera so you can snap some pics of items we've put on a list. We've picked specific objects around town and we've come up with some stuff you should be able to find anywhere.

This is a for fun event to benefit BikeWORKS over in tower grove park. Anyone is welcome to play. It's not a race so if this is your first ride of the season you'll be perfectly fine.

Our friends at SCOSAG have been kind enough to come up with a kids section of the hunt in tower grove park. This way you and your kids can play without worrying about taking them on the road.

Wheels of Glory 3

Ah, I'm back. First, to anyone out there who actually reads my blog, sorry about the huge delay on posting. I got caught up with a combination of work, illness, procrastination, and the desire to rest after the last race. This review is long overdue, so I'll get right into it:

The turn out for this third race was smaller than the second. It was more around the size of the first race which was fine. We had about as many racers as the second event though.

Thanks to Karl over at A&M we had many many more prizes to hand out to people.

Basically, we ran everyone through the first round as usual, and at the end we took the top distances and moved them on to the next round. We had a bit of a smaller crowd this race so we were able to keep more people in per round. We double, triple and quadruple checked the bike's calibration this time so they were completely even. We didn't have a bike that looked like it was winning over another bike. Also we had only minor bike malfunction this time that had us down one bike for maybe 6 minutes before it was back up. All in all I think the third race went the smoothest out of all of them. Third time's a charm.

In the end, Seth, Marcus and Jim won first, second, and third place respectively as far as the overall races.

Sorry Jim, I guess we didn't get an action shot of you in your power hoodie.

We also had a number of other winners for our age categories. Here's how the overall race broke down:

In the end, we generated about 350 dollars for SCOSAG which they'll be using to fund some awesome stuff for their kids.

Wheels of Glory III Tonight!!

All of the prizes are assembled, the spoke cards are made, the t's are dotted and the i's are crossed. Tonight is the night! The last Wheels of Glory race of the season.
If you've never been before, this is your last chance to watch or race inside at The Atomic Cowboy before they kick us out. I've you have been to one or both of the previous rides you already know the drill. Doors at 5, registration at 7, races at 8.

The money for this race is being donated to SCOSAG.

I hope everyone has a chance to come out and ride. Hopefully after our article in the RFT (shameless plug) we'll get an even bigger crowd this time.

Well, the North American Hand built Bike Show was FREAKING AWESOME!!!

Let me start out with my favorite bikes, the road and track bikes from Zullo:

My first (and current) road bike is an Italvega Super Light which is also a hand built Italian bike. The look so similar that I automatically had an affection towards Zullo's bikes. The green track bike is freaking awesome. Too bad I'm not made out of money :/

My second favorite was the Bad Penny bike from Groovey Peacock:

I have a particular draw towards this bike because, again, it reminds me of my Motobecane Le Champion, Matilda. She is another one of my bikes. The bad penny looks like the copper counterpart to my chrome matilda.

I think more than just nostalgia, I like these bikes best because I like the thin frames. I know that you can get bikes that are much lighter with large carbon fiber tubes, but small steal tubes just look more aesthetically pleasing to me personally.

Groovy Peacock also had a couple of other really cool bikes:

I really like the guy's personal bike. He said that he built it as a reminder of his childhood when he would ride down the street to get fruit stripes gum:

I'm not really into the flat handlebars on track frames, but this one looks great. That peacock cutout in the drops alone makes this bike amazing!

Naked bikes had a really really cool bike at the show:
This bike costs over $16,000 dollars! 16,000!!!!! JFC, if I bought a bike like this I would never want to ride it! It sure is beautiful though.

There were plenty of examples of nice lug work:

Lugs always look a lot nicer then weld marks.

There were also some odd looking bikes like the bamboo bike from *coughcoughcan'trememberthenameofthebuilderanddon'tfeellikelookingitup*

And the space age dildo looking bike from another bike builder that I don't remember the name of:
Seriously, I assume its supposed to be a unicorn looking bike maybe, but when you see this:
it doesn't exactly scream mythical beast, it just screams.

Again, I'm not wild about straight bars on track frames, but this track bike does look pretty awesome
This bike was pretty awesome. The picture doesn't really do it justice. The wheels on this bike were massive:

I really liked this track bike as well (if you can't tell I love green bikes).
This particular bike is really cool because the stem and handlebars are one whole piece:It also had a mast stem. The seat post is actually really small and at the top of the mast, which allows the builder to run the break cable straight through the mast:

Here's a weird looking bike. I wish they had it on the floor so that we could take a closer look at it. At first I thought it was just a tandem bike with one seat facing backwards, then I noticed that there is a normal bike seat in the middle:
Out of all the bikes at the show, that one is the one that I'd most like to ride around.

Signal have a really nice commuter bike that caught my eye. I think the more my friend Eric talks up commuters with fenders and packs, the more I want one. Plus an endorsement from Simon and Garfunkel is always a plus:

If you look close you can see that the top tube is actually two separate tubes with the break cable running in between.

Matilda is Famous!

Yeah, that's my baby.

The guy(s(girl(s))) over at MyFixedGear.net posted pictures of my bike up on their site. The site is really cool. It's all pictures of fixed geared bikes from around the country (world??).

The site is really really easy to browse through which is one of the features that drew me to the site in the first place. I like sites like FixedGearGallery.com, but unless you like to click back and forth through pages they're kind of cumbersome to browse through. Also, I like the next bike button, which pulls up a random next bike to look at instead of just going to the next one down the list.

There's a pretty good mix of track bikes, road bike conversions, trick bikes, commuters, etc. Lots of stuff to look through. They get new bikes pretty regularly so its cool seeing all of the new stuff coming through. I like seeing the amount of character that come through on all of the bikes.

Custom retro single speed cruiser

So normally I just post about the races that we at Will Cycle for Charity put on, but I think this bike is really worth a posting.

I was browsing through the STL craigslist bike section wishing I had tons of extra money for bikes and I came across this:

Custom retro single speed cruiser, aluminum (Page & Midland)

Well, I need money to help replace a vehicle so I'm selling my cruiser. I'm asking $185 or Best Offer.

First off, I have absolutely no idea who made this frame/fork. I bought this bike used from someone locally who said it was perhaps a custom build show bike for the SRAM Corporation (since it originally had a SRAM internal gear system). But I never found out for sure. It does have a serial number which would suggest that it is NOT a one-off bike. The frame is a medium to large size. I am 5'11" and it fits me well. The bike's wheelbase is longer than most mountain bikes or SS bikes, so keep that in mind when considering it. The distance from the bottom bracket to the rear dropouts is a couple inches longer than average and requires buying a tandem chain or 2 standard chains!

Since I bought it, I primed and painted the aluminum cantilever style frame and chromoly 1-1/8" threaded fork in DupliColor "Ford engine block blue". The paint job is decent with only a few minor scrapes. I also replaced the stem and seatpost with black Kalloy parts and installed a 26" alloy Shimano wheelset with older HG freehub body and Parallax design hubs. The old 7spd cassette was removed and replaced with a custom single speed cog and spacers. The drivetrain still uses the Hyperglide chain and one of the original cassette cogs. However, this setup could easily be upgraded to a true single speed chain/cog system for less than $50 (including chain). The rear wheel is a bolt-on and the front is a quick release. Tires are in good shape but not matching. The short riser handlebar is painted black alloy and the black v-brakes, grips and saddle are no-name/nothing special (the saddle was taken off a vintage 70's Fuji racer).

This bike is in excellent shape, is light weight and definately unique. However, it does not have all high-end name brand parts. So if you want an light weight, eye-cathing SS cruiser but don't want to shell out big bucks, this might be for you. I know I'm rocking the bikesnobNYC style of posting, but I figure if you're going to steal, steal from the best.

Anyway, I am not really into cruiser bikes all that much, but this one is absolutely beautiful. Some bikes look really great without labels plastered all over them. I'm not against labels, most of my bikes have the brand labels intact, but sometimes I feel like they distract from the overall feel of some bikes.

I especially feel this way about single speeds. I like the simplicity of a single speed bike and I think removing the labels kind of adds to the whole minimal look. I think that's one of the big reasons I love my single speed so much.

I also like the amount of detail and description this guy put into his post. He's very honest and open about the bike. There are a lot of very unique qualities about this bike and he does very well noting all of them. I feel like this is the sing of someone who really loves their bike and it makes me kind of sad to see that its up for sale.

I hope this bike gets picked up by someone who actually cares about bikes. I hate to think of a bike like this getting locked up and left outside to get torn up by weather and hooligans.

Anyway, its a bike worth looking at and I hope it finds a good home.

Wheels of Glory II Results!

Thanks everyone for coming out to the races!

We definitely had a much much larger turn out as far as a crowd for this race.

In the end we generated $270 dollars for the Compton Drew Dolphin Bicycle Club which is almost double what we made for the charity in the January races. The bike club will now have more than enough money to get reflective cycling vests for all of the kids. Thank you everyone for donating the money. Helping these charities are really what these races are all about.

We had a hardware problem towards the end of the first round which took out one of the bikes. Basically, someone in the crowd stepped in an area that was blocked off and took out a necessary computer cable. We had to finish the rest of the rounds with only one bike. This caused us to cut more people each round than we wanted to in order to get through the races. One of our big goals in planning this second race was to keep more people in through all of the rounds, so loosing a bike part of the way through was a big disappointment for me and I'm sure for the crowd.

All in all I think the races went well. A lot of people got to ride, a good sized crowd got to watch, and hopefully everyone had fun.

In the end, Seth Wahlman pulled off the win.

Followed closely by Richard Breininger in second

and Jason Zoll in third.

The final results were increadably close. All of the racers did an awesome job. I'll be posting the official results tomorrow.

Race Categories

We're expanding the races a bit for Wednesday night to even things out a bit for everyone. Here is the way it will break down:

Categories (in order of start time)

Masters – age 55 + men

Masters – age 55 + women

Men – ages 40-55

Women – ages 40-55

Men – ages 25-39

Women – ages 25-39

Men – ages 18-25

Women – ages 18 – 25

All categories will race each stage before the next stage begins. There are four stages.

So practically not a lot will feel like it change as far as how we call out riders. What has changed, however, is that there will be winners from each category and people will end up getting to race more than just once or twice. We want to make sure everyone gets a chance to ride a lot at the race.

Also, this time we will be trying out some track style racing. I'm currently trying to get a hold of two matching fixed gears that we can use for the velodrome track so we can do some track sprints. We will hold these races separate from the main races and see how they go.

As far as prizes go, first place winners will get a small cash payout, items donated by Big Shark and A&M, and entrance to the next races on March 11 waived.

The money we generate from the race will benefit Compton Drew Middle School Dolphin Bicycle Club, which is an after school bicycling program for 7th & 8th grade students. Their group needs reflective cycling vests for the kids so we're going to get them some (or give them the money to get the vests).

So there are several ways to keep up on the events that Will Cycle for Charity puts on.

3. Join the Will Cycle mailing list.

One email is sent out per event that outlines the events details (time, place, the charity being donated to, etc). All email addresses will be blind copied so no one will see the individual addresses. Your email won't be given out to any companies, its just to keep people in the know.

Race Results

Thank you everyone for coming out to the races. The turned out to be a great success!

We ended up generating 140 dollars for Bicycle Redemption (which was pretty good considering it was our first event and it was 3 degrees outside). Will Cycle for Charity will be buying parts to give to Bicycle redemption. I think the total count for people last night was 50 to 60 (just estimating) with 32 riders.

I think the races turned out to be pretty awesome. I was worried at first about the idea of deviating from the original idea of roller races by using trainers, doing rides with varying elevation, doing more than just sprints, but after experiencing the event I think they turned out even better. It was really entertaining to be able to see the computerized riders moving on the screen and seeing the progression on the track at the top.

I think this was able to get the interest of people who were at the bar just hanging around. It was also great when one person started to pass the other and everyone in the bar started freaking out and cheering. Thanks a ton to Maplewood Bicycle for allowing us to use their computrainsers and Bicycle Works for donating the bikes.

There are a TON of pictures from the races. All of the ones that Sara Arnold took are on her flickr. She took somewhere around 300 pictures. Here's a couple of shots:

Chris and Jason were the two finalists:

On the last race the both rode 5 miles on an uphill course. Both of the riders rode for a little over 25 minutes straight!!!

Chris pulled off the win with Jason finishing about 5 mins after (these are all approximate times b/c I don't have the score sheet in front of me). It was an extremely impressive ride, especially considering both riders raced in all four rounds. Chris walked away with 60 dollars cash and Jason got a bag of various bike goods (lights, pumps, bar tape, etc) provided by A&M Bicycles.

All in all it was a good night.

The next race will be on Feb 11th. Now that we have one race under our belts we'll be able to correct any mistakes that were made in setup and modify how the races work. This was the first time that any of us had put on this type of event as far as the computrainers and courses go. We still need to figure out exactly what changes we're going to do, but I do know that we're planning on having different race classes, road bike and fixed gear races (we didn't have access to enough general fixed bikes for this last race), and bikes with matching frame sizes and gearing. That way we can even it out for everyone.

These are supposed to be fun races to generate money for charity, but we totally understand wanting to make sure everyone has a fair chance competetivly. Basically when all of the equipment is provided on a donating or borrowing basis like it was for this first race you have to go with what you're given. I think for the second race we'll have more access to more equipment.

It's finally time!!! All of the t's have been dotted, i's have been crossed, mistake has been realized and crosses and dots have corrected, and we're ready to go!

From talking to various its sounding like we're going to have a pretty substantial turn out which is always good to hear. If we're able to pack the Cowboy to capacity I'm sure they won't mind.

I picked up the prizes from A&M yesterday. Karl was nice enough to give a bag full of stuff so we'll have enough to spread around. Prizes will go to placing riders in the bracketed races and the winner of the top speed race. Also, we decided to give a special prize to the first person who pukes while riding. Oh yes, there may be puke.

Spoke Cards Are In!

The spoke cards for the race are done. All racers that compete in the bracket races will get a spoke card. I know it doesn't really make a whole lot of since since we're not going anywhere, but everyone likes a spoke card!!

The race is almost here. Tonight will be the final testing for all of the software/hardware to make sure everything works, and then tomorrow its on!

Will Cycle for Charity

One of the things that has formed that these races has now become a part of is an group called Will Cycle for Charity.

The group consists of several cycling enthusiasts who want to come together to put on cycling related events to have fun and raise money for charity. Wheels of Glory will be the first event put on by this group. The following two races (yet to be named) on Feb and March 11th will also be organized by WCFC and The Atomic Cowboy. WCFC is also planning several other rides including a couple of cycling/movie nights, winery rides, and some more races.

We're still working on getting a website up and running for the group, but it should be up shortly. Once it is we'll be posting more information on who we are, what we do, and when we're doing it. I'll be putting up links to the site once its up.

The charity has been picked!

Half of the money generated by the ride will go to Bicycle Redemption.

Bicycle Redemption is a organization in north county that brings kids in from the surrounding neighborhoods and teaches them how to build and maintain their bikes. The kids fix up donated bikes that they get to keep once they're done.

We wanted the first race to be geared towards a cycling related cause, but it doesn't mean we only want to donate to cycling charities. If you have any ideas for charities that we can donate to for future events, please let us know.

The Event Flier

The flier is going to be printed out and passed around to different shops and groups over the next couple of weeks so keep your eye out for them. Also, everyone who rides in the even will receive a spoke card. The card will be the graphic from the flier and the Wheels of Glory text.

Wheels of Glory

On January 14th, The Atomic Cowboy will host Wheels of Glory Roller Races!

Basically, two stations will be set up with bikes mounted to rollers (for the first one they may be mounted on trainers) and as the two racers pedal the statistics for how fast and far they are going will be projected on the wall for everyone to see. The front forks for the bikes will be mounted to a solid structure so you don't have to worry about keeping balance on a full set of rollers.

The structure of the event will be two types of races:

- Bracket Races: Racers sign up and get placed on the bracket. Racers will face off one on one and the winner will go on to face other winners on the bracket. Last 3 racers will place. It's the standard Karate Kid tournament style bracket but with less karate fighting and more cycling.

-Top Speed Races: Racers have a set number of minutes (3 or 5) to hit their top speed. Top speeds for the night place.

The Atomic Cowboy and A&M Bicycles have been kind enough to offer up prizes for top racers. Hopefully after talking to a couple of other shops in town we'll have more prizes for people. Once I find out exactly what all of the prizes are I will post them on this blog. If you're a shop or a business and you would like to offer up a prize for the event, please shoot me an email.

All cyclists are welcome. This isn't a club race and it's not affiliated with any particular racing team. If you like riding bikes then you should come. If you don't like riding bikes you should come and watch.

There is no cover for the event so feel free to come and watch even if you don't want to race. There will be a $5 dollar fee to race. Half of the fee will go to the top bracket race winner (along with whatever prize is offered for first place) and the other half will be donated to a local charity (I haven't picked one in particular yet).
